First 90 Days in Croatia

Your first 90 days come down to about ten admin tasks, done in the right order. This is that order: address registration, OIB, residence, health insurance, banking, with the office for each step and the deadlines that catch people out.

Who it's for

Anyone arriving in Croatia to live, on any of three paths.

Path A: you're a Croatian citizen, including by descent. Path B: you're an EU/EEA citizen. Path C: you're from outside the EU (US, Canada, Australia, UK). Every step is marked with the path it applies to, because the deadlines and the offices differ. Nobody told me which step unlocks the next; I lost weeks at the wrong counter with the wrong paper.

What's inside

  • — Phase 0, before you land: getting your OIB, and the documents that are far easier to gather from home
  • — Week 1: registering your address, with the 3-day deadline for non-EU arrivals, the forms, and the fees
  • — Weeks 2–4: HZZO health insurance, opening a bank account, a Croatian phone number, e-Građani login
  • — Months 2–3: exchanging your driving licence before the one-year limit, choosing a doctor, settling in
  • — Worksheets: a 90-day master checklist, your key numbers and dates, and "Counter Croatian", the words and phrases you'll actually hear at the window
  • — Every fee and deadline checked against official sources, with the sources listed
